Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland president named a YWCA Greater Cleveland Woman of Achievement for 2021

Susanna Krey, president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland and senior vice president of the Sisters of Charity Health System, has been named a YWCA Greater Cleveland Woman of Achievement for 2021. She is one of eight women in Northeast Ohio selected to receive the Woman of Achievement Award at a virtual celebration event on May 21, 2021.

Each year, the YWCA Woman of Achievement Award is presented to a select group of Northeast Ohio women who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments through career success, community service, leadership, mentoring, and dedication to YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Boasting over 200 honorees, the Women of Achievement Academy is comprised of the most accomplished and esteemed leaders in Northeast Ohio.

The 2021 Women of Achievement Honorees are:

  • Carrie Carpenter – Senior Vice President, Regional Manager of Corporate Affairs, Huntington Bank
  • Gladisa Guadalupe – Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Cleveland Ballet and Founder of School of Cleveland Ballet
  • Kathryn Hall – Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, Jack Entertainment
  • Ariane Kirkpatrick – President and Chief Executive Officer, The AKA Team
  • Susanna Krey – President of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland and Senior Vice President of Sisters of Charity Health System
  • Marsha Mockabee – President and Chief Executive Officer, Urban League Greater Cleveland
  • Vanessa Whiting – President, AES Management
  • Lorna Wisham – Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Community Involvement and President, FirstEnergy Foundation

The YWCA of Greater Cleveland provided the following information about Sue in the award announcement:
Susanna Krey is the President of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland (SOCF) and Senior Vice President for Sisters of Charity Health System, which is nationally recognized for high-quality care, innovative mission effectiveness, and successful collaboration. In her SVP role, Susanna provides leadership for hospital and health system administration in the areas of corporate communications and public relations, strategic planning and alliances, and government affairs, as well as administrative oversight of all grantmaking and outreach organizations in the community. As SOCF president, she leads the foundation to accomplish its mission through targeted and strategic investments to end homelessness, address health and education disparities in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood, and to sustain critical ministries of Catholic sisters. Throughout 30 years of service, Susanna has helped to advance the robust missions of the health system and foundation ministries to the individuals, families, and communities they serve.

Earlier this year, Sue was also honored as a Crain’s Woman of Note.

Below is an excerpt from Sue’s nomination submission in response to the question, “Choose and explain the most significant career accomplishment that distinguishes the nominee as a Woman of Achievement.”

As the president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, Sue’s push for collaboration has led to working with countless organizations and individuals who share a similar mission, passion and determination to make meaningful, systemic change to leverage each of their collective strengths. In every decision Sue makes in serving the community, she relies on three critical values: collaboration and authentic listening, focus on outcomes, and mission sustainability.

Sue was on the leadership team that created the Sisters of Charity Foundations of Cleveland, Canton and South Carolina, and as senior vice president at the Sisters of Charity Health System, has overseen all community outreach ministries and foundations for more than 20 years. She has also served the majority of those 20 years as president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland. As a steward of the mission of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, Sue models their trailblazing nature with a spirit of innovation, trusting experts, evidence and the voices of the community in implementing initiatives to effect long-term change. Through the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, Sue has introduced the Housing First and Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood initiatives, and her understanding and championing of collective impact solutions have seen each of these initiatives thrive for more than a decade, using authentic listening and engagement with lived experience to help programs evolve to meet communities’ changing needs.
