Healthy Learners names new executive director

The Healthy Learners Board of Trustees has selected Amy Splittgerber as the new executive director of the organization, which is a faith-based non-profit that connects school-aged children to health care providers to help remove barriers to school success.

Splittgerber has more than 20 years of experience in public health, including serving as the founding director for two non-profit organizations focused on fostering sustainable, healthy communities. Most recently, she was the founding executive director of the SC Alliance of YMCAs, providing support to 20 YMCA associations in statewide initiatives, engaging in state and national advocacy, and developing partnerships with organizations and state agencies. She also founded Eat Smart, Move More South Carolina, where she managed a budget of $1.6 million while creating local healthy eating and active living coalitions across the state and engaging more than 1,000 partners and organizations in best practices.

“We are thrilled to have Amy as our new executive director,” said Matthew Roberts, chair of the Healthy Learners Board of Trustees. “She is highly skilled in non-profit management, partnership development, and program and fiscal management, which are all important in overseeing five program sites that serve 150 schools across South Carolina. Her extensive experience will be essential as we continue growing our mission and partnerships with local health care resources, work to reach more children, and maximize the impact we have in our communities.”

“I am excited to further a ministry that already has an impressive track record of improving children’s health status, increasing self-esteem and improving their ability to thrive in school, while being successful at narrowing the immense health disparities children without resources face,” said Splittgerber.

Splittgerber received her Bachelor of Science in health and sports studies, exercise science from Miami University, and her Master of Education in health promotion from the University of Toledo. She also completed the Duke University Non-Profit Management Certification program.

“Healthy Learners has the opportunity to serve as a catalyst for healthy children across the state by eliminating health barriers to learning so children can be active learners,” said Tom Keith, president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. “We are pleased to welcome Amy as she joins Healthy Learners at a pivotal time to maximize the impact of the ministry and lead it into the future.”

A ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, Healthy Learners has five programs that serve 150 schools across twelve (12) South Carolina school districts. The counties served are Allendale, Dillon, Fairfield, Georgetown, Greenwood, Lexington and Richland. Since its start, Healthy Learners has provided over 70,000 vision, dental, medication and other health-related services to 14,131 students over the last 27 years.
