Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina partners with statewide association to provide leadership development

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is partnering with the South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations (SCANPO) to design a comprehensive, statewide learning and development program focused on excellence in nonprofit practice. This new grant-funded program will provide opportunities that build on the foundation’s long-standing Carolina Academy program that trained more than 1,500 nonprofits leaders and practitioners over the last nine years.

“We are excited to be able to support SCANPO and help them take our learning and training model to a whole new level,” said Tom Keith, Sisters of Charity president. “Helping to make our nonprofit sector even stronger and better is the ultimate way for us to pay it forward.”

SCANPO, a nonprofit membership organization for South Carolina, will enhance and expand the capacity-building training offerings to all nonprofits across the state to include members as well as non-members. The new model will be entirely based on research and input provided by nonprofit leaders.

“SCANPO has learned that nonprofits want different ways to learn in the future and we are positioned to provide it for them,” Madeleine McGee, SCANPO’s president, said.

Although the Sisters of Charity Foundation will not be providing regular workshops as in the past, it will still offer some selective trainings around poverty and leadership for its own constituency. “We will do some focused programs based on our mission, but we will turn all other training and educational opportunities over to SCANPO to lead,” Keith said.

SCANPO is expected to announce the schedule for 2017’s capacity-building programming in the coming weeks with a major rollout occurring at the organization’s annual Nonprofit Summit being held in March at the Columbia Downtown Marriott.

“One of the things we are most excited about is how SCANPO will be able to develop local and regional partnerships that will enhance training opportunities for organizations across the state,” said Keith. “Most of the programs hosted by our foundation were Columbia based while SCANPO will spread the opportunities throughout the state to support education and capacity building.”

“Our Foundation has helped hundreds of organizations over the past nine years,” explained Keith. “It is my hope that SCANPO, in partnership with our foundation and other leading South Carolina foundations, will help thousands more.”
