Pope Francis yesterday named Bishop Edward C. Malesic, current Bishop of Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. The Sisters of Charity Health System and all of our ministries warmly welcome Bishop Malesic, whose installation will take place September 14th during a Mass in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Foundation's Innovation Mission fellowship leads to launch of Right to Counsel-Cleveland to help low-income tenants facing eviction

Housing instability, often caused by eviction, is a root cause of poverty in Cleveland. The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland began researching ways to address this issue in partnership with the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland's Innovation Mission fellowship. Cleveland City Council passed historic legislation in October making legal representation in eviction cases a right for tenants with at least one child in the household living at or below the Federal Poverty Level ($21,300). Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland gives more than $1.3 million in first-half 2020 grants

The board of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland recently approved its second-quarter grant docket, bringing total grant awards for 2020 to $1,383,609. A majority of funding in first and second quarters supported response efforts to basic needs support following COVID-19, as well as sustained focus on the foundation's core strategic areas of homelessness and Catholic sister ministry. Good Samaritan grants from Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland support food, hygiene needs in wake of COVID-19

Amid this global crisis, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland expedited its Good Samaritan grants program to provide financial support to the many organizations working around the clock to respond to unmet needs in Cleveland communities. In April 2020, the program provided $60,000 of basic needs funding related to the impact of COVID-19 with an additional $40,000 in grants to be distributed in May. The Little Africa Food Collaborative is one of the foundation's grantees. Its work to bring food resources and nutrition education into some of Cleveland's impoverished communities is profiled in Freshwater Cleveland. [More]
