New Promise Neighborhood partner helps students transition to high school

In its years of work in Cleveland’s Central community, the Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood has recognized that the process of choosing a high school starts in middle school. Unfortunately, many of Promise’s families report that students currently transitioning from middle to high school have access to few resources to motivate them around personal interests and high school choice. To help students better understand their options for high school and recognize what makes a good fit, Promise worked with College Now Greater Cleveland to install a full-time high school transition advisor in Central middle schools. Promise Neighborhood early learning navigator wins Family Connections award

Tatiana Wells, Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood’s early learning navigator, received the 2018 Carolyn Grossman Award from Family Connections for her work with parents of early learners. Longtime Cleveland Heights kindergarten teacher Carolyn Grossman recognized that parents can make an enormous difference in their child’s ability to learn and grow, but need support in preparing their young children to learn in school. The Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood kicked off its #PromiseReads initiative at the Friendly Inn Settlement’s back-to-school rally earlier in August. Promise team members handed out #PromiseReads backpacks filled with school supplies, as well as bookmarks and books from the Kids Book Bank, to encourage reading among families and children. The Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood awarded scholarships to 12 scholars in East Tech High School’s graduating class of 2018 in a May 11 awards ceremony, offering a boost to get them started on the next step of their education journey. Central Promise Neighborhood hosts back-to-school rally

Families lined up outside the Friendly Inn Settlement in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood before doors opened at noon on Monday for the annual Back to School Rally. School representatives, community support organizations and barbers filled the auditorium, offering back to school supplies and advice on how to choose the best school, as well as free haircuts. Reading paves way to new bicycles in Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood

A dozen first and second graders in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood have new bicycles to enjoy this summer thanks to a program called Read and Ride. Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood and the Knights of Pythias Owatonna Lodge #62 hosted Read and Ride at the three Cleveland Metropolitan School District elementary schools in the neighborhood.
