Working to address the social drivers of community health in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood and beyond
The Neighborhood Need
Cleveland’s Central neighborhood and its nearly 12,000 residents face any number of inherent challenges—including generational trauma, poverty and violence. Addressing the most critical needs of residents and the surrounding area is a priority for the St. Vincent Charity Health & Healing Hub.
The Health & Healing Vision
The St. Vincent Charity Health & Healing Hub, a neighborhood legacy initiative of the Sisters of Charity Health System, will serve as a hub for the community, offering comprehensive programming and services to address the most critical needs. This initiative will continue to serve the neighborhood of the former St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, located on a seven-acre campus in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood at East 22nd Street and Community College Avenue—carrying on a legacy that began in 1865. The Health System has several components already in place to make this concept a reality and is identifying new partnerships to expand service offerings.
While still in the early phases, multiple parts are falling into place, with a formal phase 1 launch of the Health & Healing Hub anticipated in 2026. Work to bring the initiative to fruition includes:
- Hosting community input sessions
- Recruiting and identifying potential agency partners to support
and address the neighborhood’s most critical needs - Identifying areas for new or rehabbed construction within the
geographic footprint of the former hospital grounds - Sourcing funders and grants to make the vision a reality

Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood gets new garden at Marion-Sterling Elementary School
Thanks to supportive community members, a brand-new garden for the Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood is in the works at Marion-Sterling Elementary School on Central Avenue and East 30th Street. The garden – which was relocated from East 76th Street and Cedar Avenue – will be incorporated into classroom lessons, after-school activities and eventually, summer programming.

Healthy Learners hosts annual adult spelling bee fundraiser
Healthy Learners Greenwood recently hosted its annual Adult Spelling Bee, in memory of George Nolan, with adults showing off their spelling skills. Teams of four battled it out, word by word, in a quest for orthographic glory - all to support children in Greenwood, South Carolina, with access to essential health care.

Early Childhood Resource Center celebrates launch of Unified Early Learning System Pilot in Akron
The Early Childhood Resource Center (ECRC) is at the forefront of an innovative, collaborative effort to strengthen Akron’s early learning landscape. On September 4, the ECRC joined with more than a dozen community partners, as the City of Akron announced the launch of a Unified Early Learning System (UELS) for Summit County. Phase I of this effort involves a 12-month pilot designed to stabilize child care businesses, support early childhood educators and expand family access to high-quality early learning opportunities.

Healthy Learners names Derek Cromwell new executive director
Healthy Learners has announced Derek Cromwell as the new executive director of the organization, which is a faith-based non-profit committed to removing health-related barriers to learning for children across South Carolina. Gwen Walker was also appointed as the new community manager for the Lowcountry region.
