Regina Health Center Receives $1M in Gifts for Facility Upgrades

Lead $500,000 gift from Katie and Charles Koch

RICHFIELD, OHIO (OCTOBER 18, 2018) – Regina Health Center, a 5-star-quality skilled nursing and assisted living facility serving Northeast Ohio, has attracted $1 million in gifts to its 25th anniversary facility upgrade campaign. Katie and Charles (Bud) Koch – former chairman, president and CEO of Charter One Financial – provided the lead gift of $500,000, which is the largest outright gift commitment by an individual donor in Regina Health Center’s history.

“Across Northeast Ohio, Catholic sisters have devoted their lives to taking care of others – be it through health care, education or direct ministry,” Katie Koch said. “For that reason, Bud and I appreciate the mission of Regina Health Center to provide top-ranked care for aging religious so they – and lay people as well – can retire in a high quality, compassionate and faith-based environment.”

To date, additional major gifts for the overall $2.5 million renovation project include:

  • $100,000 from Elizabeth P. Macintyre, M.D. and Joseph A. Sopko, M.D.
  • $100,000 from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland
  • $100,000 from the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine
  • $100,000 from the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland
  • $100,000 from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous

The facility upgrade will significantly update the comfort and style of resident rooms, as well as many common areas, nursing stations and more. Mt. Augustine, which is the home of Regina Health Center, opened in 1957 as the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. A portion of the building was renovated and converted into a skilled nursing facility in 1993.

This will be the largest interior upgrade to Regina Health Center since it opened, and active fundraising continues.

“When it is completed in 2020, the upgrade will greatly enhance the resident experience as we continue providing compassionate, exceptional care in a beautiful, comfortable home,” said Mark Yantek, executive director of Regina Health Center. “We are exceedingly grateful to Katie, Bud and all of our donors for their vision and support of this project, which will bring the interior aesthetics of this ministry in line with our top quality and family satisfaction rankings.”

The Kochs have been involved with Regina Health Center for more than two decades. Katie has been a longtime member of the board of directors. She chairs both the mission support and donor relations committee, and the 25th anniversary committee. She and Bud are also involved with the annual Holy-In-One Golf Outing and were both instrumental in completing the development study that led to the facility update plan.

“Regina Health Center is a unique ministry where many religious communities come together and share in daily life with each other, with diocesan clergy and with many lay members, who come because they have heard Regina Health Center is special,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. “We are so proud of all of our wonderful friends who saw the need for renewal and have come forth to be a part of the solution.”
