Mercy Medical Center inducts physicians into Society of St. Luke

Mercy Medical Center recently honored physicians for outstanding service to patients, the hospital and the community during the 2016 induction ceremony and dinner for the Society of St. Luke, Mercy’s physician honor society. Honorees included Ahmed El Ghamry Sabe, M.D., and Joe L. Carpenter, D.M.D.  

Society of St. Luke 2014 honoree William D. Murphy, M.D., was also inducted at the 2016 event held August 18 at Brookside Country Club. More than 220 guests were in attendance to share in the celebration.

Dr. Sabe, a Board Certified Interventional Cardiologist, was appointed to Mercy’s medical staff in 1995. He serves as executive director of Mercy Heart Center, medical director of Mercy’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and co-director of Mercy Emergency Chest Pain Center, which earned the nation’s first accreditation by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. He was also instrumental in establishing Mercy Cardiovascular Institute (MCI) and serves as executive director. 

A nationally recognized pioneer in emergency cardiac care, Dr. Sabe has performed many firsts including the world’s first angioplasty in an emergency department, Stark County’s first unprotected left main coronary stent and Stark County’s first radial stent coronary angioplasty. In 2001, Dr. Sabe initiated the nation’s first ER use of cariopulmonary Bypass to resuscitate victims of heart attack and performed Akron/Canton’s first gamma brachytherapy.  

Dr. Carpenter, a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, was appointed to Mercy’s Medical Staff in 1990. An educator with clinical appointments to the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Ohio University Collge of Osteopathic Medicine, his greatest impact for Mercy has been his leadership in developing, designing and implementing the Mercy Dental Services General Practice Residency Program (GPR). From the program’s inception, Dr. Carpenter has been a clinical instructor, lecturer and mentor. He also served as the first chair of Mercy Dental Services from 2007 to 2011, which, since its opening, has provided about 65,000 patient appointments.

Dr. Carpenter is vice chair of the Mercy Medical Center Board of Directors and chairs the Mercy Quality and Medical Affairs Committee. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, he participated in the Vision for Veterans’ Dental programs, offering in-kind oral surgery for veterans in need. Professionally, he has held many positions in the Stark County Dental Society, including president in 2000. His active memberships include the Ohio Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Murphy, a radiologist, was appointed to Mercy’s Medical Staff in 1990. He has served as a past president of Mercy’s Medical Staff and previously chaired the Medical Staff Bylaws Committee. He has served as chairman of the Department of Radiology and was a member of the Medical Executive Committee and the Medical Quality Review Board. 

The Society is named after St. Luke, author of the Bible’s third gospel and a physician often known as the “patron saint of physicians.” In his gospel, St. Luke emphasized Jesus’ concern for all people, especially the poor and neglected. Mercy recognized this compassionate spirit of medicine through the Society of St. Luke.
