Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina announces 2019 Unsung Hero Award recipients for kinship care

As part of its kinship care initiative, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina recently awarded it 2019 Unsung Hero Award to three of South Carolina’s kinship caregivers who have provided outstanding care to children for more than a year.

“The recipients of this year’s Unsung Hero Award couldn’t be more deserving. They’ve faced challenges that many people can’t imagine, and they’ve done so with grace and courage. We’re proud to honor them,” said Tom Keith, president of Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina.

Patricia Brown
Patricia has been a kinship care provider for nine years. After her daughter and son-in-law died, she and her husband were determined to raise their six grandchildren. At 70 years old and now a widow and cancer-survivor, Patricia continues to care for her 10, 12 and 17-year-old grandchildren. Each day she reminds herself that she’s “determined not to look like what I’ve been through.”

Brandy Patterson
Brandy has provided kinship care to her seven grandchildren for more than five years. While feeding and clothing that many children is no easy feat, Brandy makes it look so easy that she’s been asked to teach parenting classes. She makes sure her family eats healthy meals together daily, and she limits their time with technology. She even gardens with them and grows their favorite vegetables. Brandy’s nominator noted that Brandy’s house is filled with smiles and laughter, and that the grandchildren love taking any chance to brag on their “Bambi.”

Sabrina Williams
Sabrina has provided kinship care to three children over the course of 11 years. Years after adopting her niece, she learned that her two young grandsons needed her. Raising young children with special needs and limited resources can be a challenge, but Sabrina and the children have proven their resilience. Sabrina ensures the children attend each of their necessary appointments, are engaged in the community, and that they each receive structure, nurturing and quality time with her. Sabrina’s nominator noted that “she is one of the most resilient, resourceful and capable caregivers [she’s] had the privilege to work with.”

Recipients of the 2019 Unsung Hero Award received a monetary prize, a customized award, and they are featured on the foundation’s website and social media platforms.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, founded in 1996. Their mission is to address the needs of the poor and underserved throughout the state of South Carolina. Through the strategic use of resources, they seek to reduce poverty through action, advocacy and leadership.
