Janice G. Murphy to lead Mission and Ministry at Cleveland’s Catholic health system 

As covered in Crain's Cleveland Business and Becker's Hospital Review, the Sisters of Charity Health System has named Janice G. Murphy, RN, BSN, MSN, FACHE as senior vice president of mission and ministry. In this role, she will give leadership and oversight to mission and values across the health system. She will oversee programs and processes to ensure the decisions, policies and programs of the health system and all operating units are consistent with the mission, philosophy, faith obligations and values of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, as well as the elements of Catholic identity and the social teachings of the Catholic Church.  

Murphy’s career includes 40 years of health care leadership. She is currently serving as chief operating officer (COO) of regional hospitals and family health centers for the Cleveland Clinic. In this role since 2015, she has been responsible for the operations of 10 community hospitals, 21 family health centers, three freestanding emergency departments, and three health and wellness centers. Prior, she has served as COO of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview and Lakewood Hospitals, senior vice president and COO of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, and chief nursing officer of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital. 

“Jan brings with her a wealth of expertise in leadership and patient care, which will enhance her role in focusing on the mission of the health system,” said Thomas J. Strauss, president & CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System. “At a time of rapid changes in health care, the insights she will bring to our executive leadership team will help keep our ministries at the forefront of Catholic health ministry.”

Murphy is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She holds a master’s degree in nursing and administration from the University of Akron, bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bowling Green State University, registered nursing degree from the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing, and LPN from Marymount School of Practical Nursing. Throughout her career, she has been recognized by many for excellence in leadership development, facility management, clinical quality and compassion. 

“My brother, Jim, was critically burned at Our Lady of the Highway Shrine on July 4, 1968. I was a freshman at St. Joseph Academy and witnessed how the nurses cared for him and my parents. Following six years as a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame, I decided health care was my true calling and entered nursing school,” said Murphy. “Today, I am so grateful to combine two very important aspects of my life – my faith and career.”

As she joins the Sisters of Charity Health System on November 1, Murphy will oversee integration of the philosophy and values of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine into the daily operations of the Sisters of Charity Health System and all of its operating units. Her areas of responsibility include mission formation, leadership development, sponsorship, ethics, pastoral care, palliative care, and diversity and inclusion. 

“We are proud that Jan, who also had the opportunity to be educated by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in her early years, is bringing her many gifts to Catholic health,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, chair of the public juridic person of the Sisters of Charity Health System and congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine – the health system’s founding congregation.  “Jan will bring vital knowledge and experience to all of our ministries.”

The Sisters of Charity Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in Ohio and South Carolina. The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine is a congregation of women religious that, since founding in 1851, continues a faith-based legacy of high-quality, compassionate care in partnership with its co-ministers, who are the heart and hands of the ministry.

The Sisters of Charity Health System solely owns two Catholic hospitals: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio; and Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio. The health system also oversees three grantmaking foundations located in Cleveland, Canton and Columbia, South Carolina. Each foundation sponsors significant community initiatives and collaborations that address causes and consequences of poverty. Outreach organizations include Joseph’s Home, a unique residential care center for homeless men in Cleveland; Early Childhood Resource Center for people working in childcare in all settings in Canton; Healthy Learners, a health care resource for children from low-income families in South Carolina; and the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families, a state-wide organization supporting initiatives to reengage fathers in the lives of their children. The Sisters of Charity Health System also provides residential elder care services at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio, and Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford, Ohio.
