St. Vincent Charity Medical Center to sponsor opiate addiction conference

St. Vincent Charity Medical Center is sponsoring an opiate conference September 29 in Cleveland to address the growing opiate epidemic that continues unabated in Northeast Ohio and across the United States. The conference, Opiate Addiction: The Issues Impacting the Patient, Family and Community, runs from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn – Downtown Cleveland.

The event will include a number of speakers, including Dr. Thomas Gilson, the medical examiner of Cuyahoga County, and Dr. Ted Parran, associate medical director of Rosary Hall at St. Vincent Charity. The speakers will be discussing trends in drug abuse and overdoses, personal stories, managing opioid dependent patients, resources for families, and more.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner reported recently that August was the deadliest month with 52 deaths from overdoses of heroin, fentanyl and now, carfentanil, which is an elephant sedative 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 2,500 times the potency of heroin. Through August, there have been 330 deaths from overdoses in Cuyahoga County, up from 228 for all of 2015. 

The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $35 per person and include CEU opportunities.
