Mercy Development Foundation dedicates Huseyin ‘Sam’ Sarikaya, MD, Memorial Laboratory

Mercy Development Foundation recently held a blessing and dedication ceremony of the Huseyin “Sam” Sarikaya, MD, Memorial Laboratory at Mercy Medical Center, part of a donor recognition event for the family and friends of Dr. Sam Sarikaya, a well-known pathologist at Mercy for more than 40 years. Upon his death in 2015, Dr. Sarikaya left an estate gift of nearly $1 million to Mercy for the hospital’s area of greatest need. A display wall in his honor was unveiled during the ceremony.

During the event, many family members, friends and Mercy employees shared their memories of Dr. Sarikaya, including his outstanding career accomplishments, distinguished service to patients, and love for Mercy and its mission. In honor of his commitment to excellence and education, he was inducted into Mercy's prestigious Society of St. Luke.

Born and raised in Turkey, Dr. Sarikaya emigrated to the United States as an obstetrician and gynecologist. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston for his degree in pathology. Passionate about education, research and his profession, he had many articles published in medical journals and was a mentor to physicians and staff members. He also was very dedicated to Mercy and the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, and his generosity will strengthen the mission and ministry of the hospital.

“It was a honor to be a part of this project  that recognized such a remarkable Mercy physician, Dr. Huseyin Sarikaya,” says Elaine Campbell, director, Mercy Development Foundation. “The donor recognition event and laboratory blessing and dedication allowed for the gathering of his family, friends and former co-workers, and fond memories were shared of his generosity, passion for education and outstanding career of over 40 years. His significant estate gift ensures that his legacy and love for Mercy will continue.”

About Mercy Development Foundation
Mercy Development Foundation, a separate non-profit corporation, helps Mercy Medical Center, which is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, meet its future needs through charitable gift planning. The foundation exists solely to benefit the patients, programs, services and capital needs by enhancing the financial capabilities of the hospital while continuing the mission and philosophy of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. The foundation not only oversees the solicitation of funds and gifts from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations, but receives, receipts, records and acknowledges all gifts, and then manages and invests these funds in order to disburse them in the best interests of the hospital.

As a Catholic health-care organization, the mission of Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Development Foundation are the same: to continue Christ’s healing ministry by providing quality, compassionate, accessible and affordable care to the whole person – regardless of ability to pay.
