Providence Heart & Vascular Institute unveils new, exclusive aortic valve surgery

Providence Hospitals recently announced that it is the exclusive home of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) surgery in the Midlands of South Carolina.

The intricate procedure is for those patients with aortic stenosis—who are at high risk for traditional aortic valve surgery—to have their constricted aortic valve replaced without opening the chest. A stent mounted valve is routed through the femoral artery and deployed in the native aortic valve allowing blood to flow out of the patient’s heart more freely.

A TAVR surgery requires a full team of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and members of both the cath lab and cardiovascular operating room teams to perform the procedure.

“Providence Heart & Vascular Institute has a history of leadership in cardiovascular care in the Midlands,” said J.P. Sutton, surgeon and clinical lead for the TAVR program. “It was important to bring this technology to our patients because it opens up therapy to improve quality of life and even reduces mortality risk for patients we could not previously treat.”

“For patients with extreme narrowing of the aortic valve, TAVR at Providence means there is a way to improve their quality of life for a condition so severe that was previously inoperable,” said George Zara, president and CEO of Providence Hospitals. “Providence continues to provide cutting-edge care because we are committed to making the best options available for all patients through our continued service to the community.”

As a part of Providence Hospitals’ mission to provide the best care through its healing ministry, the hospital continues to find innovative ways to treat some of the most difficult heart conditions in South Carolina. Most recently, the program was recognized with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons highest rating, three stars, for the 13th consecutive rating period. Providence has achieved this rating since the accolade’s inception.

Nationally, just over 200 hospitals offer this groundbreaking TAVR surgery. Click here for more information on the TAVR team and the procedure itself. Providence Hospitals is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System.
