Providence Hospitals receives twelfth consecutive 3-star rating from Society of Thoracic Surgeons

Providence Heart & Vascular Institute has, for the twelfth consecutive rating period, received a “3 star” rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). This rating is based on empirical clinical information and exhibits the institute’s long-standing reputation of providing high quality outcomes.

Approximately 14% of heart programs of the more than 1,000 programs reviewed received a 3-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality.  Providence has received the “3 star” rating since the inception of the comprehensive STS rating system in 2006 that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals in the United States. As the number of health providers has increased throughout the years, Providence Heart & Vascular Institute remains a stalwart amongst top rated institutions. 94% of all heart programs in the country submitted to this review by STS.

“We are committed to sustained quality at Providence Hospitals and our peers have again noted that achievement,” says Dr. E. “Mac” Leppard, one of five Providence Hospitals’ cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons. “As a leader in heart surgery for decades, Providence Hospitals and our partners are proud of this track record and what it means for our patients. We will work diligently to continue to offer the highest levels of quality of care for our patients as we look to 2013, our 75th year of service in and around Columbia.”

STS is the leading international professional organization for heart surgeons, and is dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for heart, lung and esophagus surgeries, as well as other surgical procedures within the chest. Their ranking system and quality measures are based on a database of more than 4.5 million data points.
