Community Benefits

In 2010, the Sisters of Charity Health System provided $54.7 million in community benefit (including uncompensated care) through five acute-care Catholic hospitals, three grantmaking foundations, two eldercare facilities and numerous community outreach organizations.

Of the $54.7 million provided in community benefit, $45 million was total uncompensated care, which consisted of $22 million in the charity care at cost and $23 million in the unpaid cost of Medicaid; with $9.7 million in other outreach and health services offered to the community (based upon the Catholic Health Association model). Not included in the community benefit calculation, but significant: the system experienced $58.2 million in bad debt in 2010.
