Cleveland's Desire to Be a Trans Fat Free City
Date: 01/03/2012
.

The Sisters of Charity Health System and our ministries are active participants in the Healthy Cleveland Initiative.

Devoted to healing individuals, families and communities, the Sisters of Charity Health System strongly supports Mayor Frank Jackson, Council President Martin Sweeney, Councilman Joe Cimperman, the Health and Human Services Committee members, and our fellow health care providers in creating a healthier Cleveland.

The Sisters of Charity Health System, as well as the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth System and University Hospitals, have been a meaningful part of Healthy Cleveland since the inception of this far-ranging approach to implement city-wide legislation related to smoking cessation, diet and nutrition, violence prevention, mobility and exercise, and behavioral health. Healthy Cleveland unites the four health systems around the City of Cleveland’s work to promote community wellness by lending expertise, knowledge and validity to the conversation and actions under taken and to come.

Our support of the Healthy Cleveland Initiative includes the city’s effort to ban the sale of foods containing industrially produced trans fats from restaurants and food shops. Since 2006, food prepared at Sisters of Charity Health System’s three Ohio hospitals has been trans fat free.

Unlike other fats, trans fat — also called trans fatty acids — raises a person's "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and lowers the "good" (HDL) cholesterol. A high LDL cholesterol level in combination with a low HDL cholesterol level increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death and disability in men and women.

The Sisters of Charity Health System and our ministries will continue to support and help inform all Healthy Cleveland efforts, especially in the areas of health literacy and behavioral health, throughout 2012 and beyond.
