Vatican-Approved Change Introduces a New Generation of Sponsorship

CLEVELAND, OH, August 2007 – For the first time in their 156-year history, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA) now share sponsorship of their health and human service ministries with committed lay people. Vatican approval has been received for a new Public Juridic Person (PJP) of pontifical right – CSA Health System Ministries – to continue Catholic Church oversight of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System (now known as the Sisters of Charity Health System). This historic action shifts corporate decision-making authority from the exclusive scope of the religious congregation to the new PJP, whose members include Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine and committed laity.

At present there are six Catholic health systems in the United States that have made this type of bold, long-term strategic decision to preserve Catholic identity of health care ministries and to celebrate the gifts of the laity. The Sisters of Charity Health System, with assets of $1.025 billion, oversees 20 diverse health and human service organizations in Ohio and South Carolina, including five acute care hospitals, three grantmaking foundations, two geriatric residential care centers, and several outreach ministries.

“The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine have been honored with the partnership of lay people who have been sincerely dedicated to our community and our Mission since its very beginning. Through this new sponsorship model, we embrace a role for laity that is more significant than ever before,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, President and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System.

The process for restructuring the organization began in 2002 when the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine
engaged an outside consultant to perform extensive research and interviews with other congregations, Catholic health systems and hospital administrators to objectively evaluate various sponsorship structures.

“The Sisters recognized early on the importance of having lay partners involved in preserving their mission and ministry,” said Terrence Kessler, Board Chair for the Sisters of Charity Health System.

“For our Congregation, there was a sense of gratitude and relief, but also great excitement, when the final letter came from the Vatican. What we do in the ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine is really the work of the church, not just the congregation. Going forward, we know we can continue God’s mission in partnership with the very faithful and dedicated lay, people who have always been a part of our history,” said Sister Miriam Erb, CSA congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.

“We are confident that this step ensures that the mission of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine and the Catholic identity of our ministries will live on long into the future,” continued Sister Miriam.

Under the previous structure, the CSA Congregational Leader and two other Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine held sponsorship responsibilities. Going forward with the new PJP, there will be a minimum of five Members, each appointed by the CSA Congregational Leader. The Members of this CSA Health System Ministries (the new PJP) are: Sisters Miriam Erb, CSA, Mary Ann Andrews, CSA and Cabrini Ferritto, CSA along with Albert DeGulis, recently retired Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Alliance Capital Management in Cleveland, and Terrence Kessler, a partner with the law firm Black, McCuskey, Souers & Arbaugh. Both men have served for several years on the Sisters of Charity Health System Board of Directors, which Mr. Kessler currently chairs. In addition, John Boudreaux, founder of The Boudreaux Group, an architectural firm in South Carolina, who also serves as president of the Board of Trustees for The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, is a member of the new PJP.

Across the United States, many orders of Catholic women religious are smaller than they were decades ago but are still very active in carrying out their mission and ministries. The same is true of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.

“As small as we are, we’re still alive and vibrant,” said Sister Miriam. “We are still very much an active part of our various ministries and, in fact, we started a new ministry in Lakewood, Ohio, just a few years ago. This new ministry, Centering Space, is a place for prayer, listening and spiritual direction open to both individuals and groups. Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine are also in service and have been instrumental in

the establishment of Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio; Joseph’s Home in Cleveland, Ohio; Catholic Worker House of Peace in Akron, Ohio; and the Interfaith Wellness Center in Irvine, Kentucky.

“Our goal is to establish the structure and processes, as well as develop the leaders, for the next generation, not much differently than a family-owned business might endeavor to develop a formal succession plan,” said Sister Judith Ann. “Above all, we are bound to be responsible stewards of the Ministry.”

About Sisters of Charity Health System
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Sisters of Charity Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in Ohio and South Carolina. In 1999, Sisters of Charity Health System formed two Ohio not-for-profit corporations with University Hospitals Health System to equally own and operate St. John West Shore Hospital, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Cuyahoga Physician Network, West Shore Primary Care and Professional Medical Equipment. Through this equal ownership, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine continue their legacy of high quality, compassionate care that began at the time of the founding of these organizations.

The Sisters of Charity Health System is the sole sponsor of Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, a leading cardiovascular center in South Carolina, which includes Providence Hospital/Providence Heart Institute and Providence Hospital Northeast in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition, this organization oversees three grantmaking foundations located in Cleveland, Canton and Columbia, SC, which foster significant community initiatives that address root causes of poverty; as well as several other health and human services and education-related organizations including Cleveland’s Joseph’s Home, a unique residential care center for homeless men; Canton’s Early Childhood Resource Center, which promotes quality child care; and Healthy Learners, a South Carolina health care resource for children from low-income families. The Sisters of Charity Health System also provides residential eldercare services at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio and Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford, Ohio. Light of Hearts Villa is jointly sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.
