November, 11, 2008: Cleveland, Ohio – Award-winning journalist Wendy A. Hoke has joined the Sisters of Charity Health System as Communications Officer, where she will implement  strategic communications efforts for the Cleveland-based organization and its 20 health and human service ministries in Ohio and South Carolina.  The announcement was made by Sisters of Charity Health System President & CEO Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA.

 “We are pleased to have Wendy Hoke join us as Communications Officer.  Her significant background in journalism will be a significant contribution to our organization’s efforts in  media relations, internal and external communications, and other pertinent initiatives to tell the collective story of this organization,” said Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA. 

A seasoned writer and editor for nearly 20 years, Ms. Hoke spent the past five years covering education reform, personality profiles, book reviews, faith and social justice issues. Her work has appeared in various national and regional publications, including The Christian Science Monitor, The Plain Dealer, Catalyst-Ohio, The Columbus Dispatch, the Catholic Universe Bulletin and Continental magazine.   

Consistently recognized for excellence in writing and reporting, this year, Ms. Hoke accepted a first place award from the Catholic Press Association for feature writing. She was also selected as a 2008 Peter Jennings Fellow for Journalism & the Constitution at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. In May, the Cleveland Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists presented her with the Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Society & Profession, the chapter’s highest honor.

Ms. Hoke’s work with SPJ over 15 years included leadership positions at both the local and national level. Her SPJ travels have taken her as far as Seoul, South Korea, where she presented at the East Asia Journalists Forum. Ms. Hoke spent three years following the small-school transformation of Cleveland Heights High School by reporting from inside the high school as a storyteller for KnowledgeWorks Foundation.  The narrative culmination of this work was published in October 2008. 

Previously, Ms. Hoke worked for three years as Managing Editor for Custom Publishing Group in Cleveland. Her responsibilities included serving as project manager on three frequency publications, including Charleston (WV) city magazine, The Leading Edge and special sections of Crain’s Cleveland Business.  She also edited COSE Update magazine for two years.  At Avenues Publishing, LLC, Ms. Hoke was Assistant Editor for five years. 

Prior to that, Ms. Hoke was a general assignment reporter for Sun Newspapers from 1990 to 1995.  She covered news and people in the communities of Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights as well as several state offices, including governor, attorney general and state representatives.  She began her career in journalism reporting for the Rocky Fork Enterprise in Gahanna, Ohio.  

A graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, Ms. Hoke currently is a member of the American Society of Journalists & Authors. She resides in Bay Village with her husband Daniel and their three sons.
