THE SISTERS OF CHARITY HEALTH SYSTEM ANNOUNCES WINNERS  OF ANNUAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS IN OHIO AND SOUTH CAROLINA
Cleveland, Ohio/ AUGUST, 2008 – Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA, President and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System has announced the winners of the organization’s fifth annual Caritas Nursing Scholarships. The four nursing students selected to receive $2,500 scholarships represent each of the three communities served by the Sisters of Charity Health System: Canton and Cleveland, Ohio and South Carolina. The students are employees or family members of employees at one of the Sisters of Charity Health System’s 20 sponsored ministries, which includes five sponsored hospitals — Mercy Medical Center in Canton, St. Vincent Charity Hospital and St. John West Shore Hospital in Cleveland, Providence Hospital and Providence Hospital Northeast in South Carolina as well as three charitable foundations, nursing home and assisted living facilities, and several community outreach organizations.

The four students selected to receive the scholarship met strict criteria in the areas of scholastic achievement, community service and commitment to the nursing profession. Each applicant’s financial need and personal compatibility with the mission of the Sisters of Charity Health System were also considered. Numerous applications were received and reviewed by internal committees in Canton and Cleveland, Ohio and Columbia, South Carolina.
The 2008 Caritas Nursing Scholarship winners are: Kevin Bond — Columbia, SC: Mr. Bond has worked at Providence Hospital for 13 years, currently serving as a surgical technologist in the Cardiovascular Surgery department. He will enter nursing school in the fall at Calhoun Technical College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Mr. Bond has also been active in the community through his involvement in United Way and the Heart Walk, which is a campaign to raise awareness of heart disease. Margaret Castrigano — Akron, OH: Ms. Castrigano graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron last June and will begin studies at Ursuline College in the Fall. Ms. Catrigano not only exemplified the strong academic achievements required for nursing, but was also active as a volunteer at University Hospitals and the American Red Cross. She is the niece of Sr. Rosemarie Carfagna, OSU, Senior Vice President for Mission & Ministry for Sisters of Charity Health System. Jennah Hassel — Avon, OH: After completing pre-requisite courses following graduation from high school, Ms. Hassel enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Lorain County Community College in 2007. She has worked at St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake as a Patient Transporter since 2006. She previously worked there for two years as a Nutritional Services Assistant. Ms. Hassel’s daily demonstrates her commitment to nursing through her hard work, and dedication to her patients.
Patrice Meyer — Massillon, OH: Since 1992, Ms. Meyer has worked at Mercy Medical Center in Canton, OH as a Nurses’ Aide in the Same Day Surgery Unit. Ms. Meyer has received positive feedback from her patients, whom have often commended Patrice for providing exceptional attention to their needs. In addition, she is actively engaged in community service through her involvement in the Mercy Cancer Center’s ANGELS initiative, which stands for African American women Nurturing and Giving Each other Life as well as volunteered at the Schoenbrunn HealthCare nursing home. Ms. Meyer is currently in her junior year of the Nursing Program at Kent State University. According to Sr. Judith Ann, the Caritas Nursing Scholarship program was created to encourage and sustain students familiar with the mission and philosophy of Catholic health care to enter or continue in the profession of nursing. The program has become especially important in light of the growing shortage of nurses nationwide. Caritas Nursing Scholarships are awarded in recognition of Sr. Mary Patricia Barrett, CSA, and an instrumental leader in the formation of the Sisters of Charity Health System and its first president and CEO. Sr. Mary Patricia is still actively involved at the Sisters of Charity Health System in her role as Archivist and Special Assistant to the President and CEO. About the Sisters of Charity Health SystemHeadquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the Sisters of Charity Health System was established in 1982 as the parent corporation for the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in Ohio and South Carolina. In 1999, Sisters of Charity Health System formed two Ohio not-for-profit corporations with University Hospitals to equally own and operate St. John West Shore Hospital, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Cuyahoga Physician Network, West Shore Primary Care and Professional Medical Equipment. Through this equal ownership, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine continue their legacy of high quality, compassionate care that began at the time of the founding of these organizations. The Sisters of Charity Health System is the sole sponsor of Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, a leading cardiovascular center in South Carolina, which includes Providence Hospital/Providence Heart Institute and Providence Hospital Northeast in Columbia, South Carolina. The organization also oversees three grantmaking foundations located in Cleveland and Canton, OH and Columbia, SC. Each foundation sponsors significant community initiatives and collaborations that address causes and consequences of poverty. Other health and human services and education-related organizations within the Sisters of Charity Health System include Cleveland’s Joseph’s Home, a unique residential care center for homeless men, Canton’s Early Childhood Resource Center for people working in childcare in all settings; and Healthy Learners, a South Carolina health care resource for children from low-income families. The Sisters of Charity Health System also provides residential eldercare services at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio and Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford, Ohio. Light of Hearts Villa is jointly sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. ###
