CLEVELAND, Ohio/June 15, 2006 - Sr. Judith Ann Karam, CSA, President and CEO of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System (CSA Health System) has received the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA). This prestigious honor recognizes senior executives of OHA member organizations for outstanding leadership. Sr. Judith Ann accepted the award at a special Recognition Dinner in Columbus, Ohio on June 12th.
Sr. Judith Ann has served in her current role since 1999. CSA Health System oversees the sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA) in Ohio and South Carolina, including five hospitals, two elder care facilities, numerous health, human service and education-related services and four charitable foundations with assets exceeding $200 million.
The nomination of Sr. Judith Ann submitted to OHA cited Sr. Judith Ann's many achievements demonstrating innovation, leadership and dedication to the community, including:
* Development of two not-for-profit joint ownership corporations in Canton and Cleveland, Ohio between CSA Health System and University Hospitals Health System in 1999. She was also instrumental in the return of Providence Hospital and Providence Hospital Northeast in Columbia, South Carolina to full sponsorship of the CSA Health System in 2000.
* Oversight of the 1996 establishment of three new charitable foundations: Sisters of Charity Foundations in Canton and Cleveland, Ohio and in Columbia, South Carolina which have awarded millions of dollars in grants to address root causes of poverty.
* Service as Project Director for the development of Regina Health Center, a long-term care facility in Richfield, Ohio that serves 22 Catholic religious congregations, clergy and the general public. As the nation's first cooperative long-term care facility of its kind serving religious orders, it served as the model for similar facilities in the United States.
Sr. Judith Ann began her health care career as a pharmacy technician and then a pharmacist at St. Vincent Charity Hospital where, in 1973, she began the first clinical pharmacy program in the Cleveland area. Her experience in senior hospital administration includes serving as President and CEO for Mercy Medical Center, Canton, Ohio and St. John Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. She has also served as Vice President of St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake, Ohio.
In addition to her leadership in the civic community, Sr. Judith Ann has provided leadership to the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. In 1989, she was elected to leadership positions in her Congregation and completed her term as Major Superior in July, 1997. During that time, she served as Chairperson of the Conference of Religious Leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland and also as Treasurer of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the national organization for leadership of Catholic religious orders of women.
A Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives, Sr. Judith Ann's numerous community commitments have included the Mayor of Cleveland's Task Force on Health Care and the United Way Health Care Cabinet (Cleveland). In addition, she is a member of several Boards and the New Covenant Steering Committee, a national group whose members include representatives of the Catholic Health Association of the United States and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
A native Clevelander, Sr. Judith Ann holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Duquesne University and a Master of Science Degree in Hospital and Health Services Administration from the Ohio State University. She is also a 1986 graduate of Leadership Cleveland and served as a member of its Alumni Steering Committee from 1991 to 1995.
Sr. Judith Ann is a recipient of numerous awards including Crain's Cleveland Business 2001 Women of Note, the 2000 Distinguished Woman in Healthcare Award from the Visiting Nurse Association (Cleveland).and the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Ohio State University's Health Services Management and Policy graduate program. She was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Ursuline College of Cleveland in 2002.
