A hallmark of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine is their capacity to appropriately respond to emerging community needs. By expanding direct services through collaboration and innovation, the Sisters of Charity Health System continues the guiding example set by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.
Healthy Learners, South Carolina’s statewide health care network for children from low-income families, earned two of the most prestigious national awards in community health in 2006:
The Achievement Citation from the Catholic Health Association (CHA) which recognizes programs with demonstrated measurable results and a commitment to the mission and values of Catholic health care, especially care for poor and vulnerable persons.
The American Hospital Association’s NOVA Award which honors effective, collaborative programs focused on improving community health status.
Healthy Learners has touched the lives of more than 30,000 children in low-income families since 1993. School nurses refer children to the statewide network of health professionals who offer their services free of charge or at a reduced rate. There is no cost to the child, parent or school for medical care, transportation to and from medical appointments or prescription medications.
