St. Vincent Charity hosts Caritas fundraising event; honors four individuals

For the past 30 years, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center hosted its premier fundraising event, known as Pizzazz. The hospital hosted the event in October with 500 people attending, but with a new name—Caritas—which is Latin for love of all people. The event celebrated St. Vincent Charity’s important role in Cleveland with a night of entertainment and awards, highlighting several people who personify the mission and values of the hospital.

The people being honored included:

Margaret Wong, St. Vincent de Paul Award
Margaret Wong, St. Vincent Charity board member and immigration attorney, was chosen to receive the award that honors St. Vincent de Paul, the hospital’s patron saint. Each year, the hospital honors a community leader who gives not just to the hospital and its patients, but also to the Greater Cleveland community. Margaret received the award because she “shows steadfast commitment to her community, a generous spirit and unwavering dedication to the values of Catholic social teaching. She is a civic treasure to Cleveland and a blessing to the lives of so many immigrants who long to live their American dream.” See the video that played at Caritas to honor Margaret.

Lloyd Cook, M.D., Physician of the Year
Dr. Lloyd Cook, internal medicine, was chosen at the 2016 Physician of the Year. He received the award because, “Dr. Lloyd Cook is a quiet, unsung hero of our medical staff. He takes care of all God’s people with no distinction, treating all with the same quality, concern and compassion. As a medical home, his practice was recently recognized with a Gold Star Achievement Award from the Better Health Partnership for the successful treatment and management of his patients with hypertension. Dr. Cook spreads his passion for healing to residents at St. Vincent Charity and is committed to helping the hospital in any way he can. He is truly someone who believes and acts with the healing mission of Jesus in mind.” See a video that played at Caritas to honor Dr. Cook.

Mary Martin, RN, Clinical Nursing Excellence Award
“Compassionate. Big heart. Professional. Respectful. Terrific. Knowledgeable.” Those were just a small sampling of the words that caregivers used to describe Mary Martin in selecting her as St. Vincent Charity’s 2016 recipient of the Clinical Nursing Excellence Award during Nurses’ Week in May. She was recognized by her fellow nurses for her dedication to patients and her enthusiasm for the profession of nursing. She was again honored at the Caritas event. Eugene Jordan, Radiant Spirit Award
Eugene Jordan received the inaugural Radiant Spirit Award at Caritas. The Radiant Spirit Award is presented to individuals in the community who live lives of quiet dignity, service to their fellow man, heroism, generosity of spirit, warmth, leadership, care and love. As stated at the event, “It’s safe to say that everyone at St. Vincent Charity knows Eugene Jordan. He’s our humble painter and kind soul that can always be seen with a friendly smile on his face. As the recipient of this inaugural award, Eugene embodies all that makes St. Vincent Charity a loving and compassionate community.” See a video that played at Caritas to honor Eugene.
