St. Vincent Charity Medical Center and Cleveland State University begin new collaboration sessions

As part of an initiative to bridge the gap between significant biomedical research being conducted at Cleveland State University (CSU) and the clinical expertise at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, 12 faculty scientists from the College of Engineering and College of Sciences and Healthcare Professions recently presented their research to a large audience of clinicians at the hospital.

The rapid-fire format of the program gave the presenters an opportunity to quickly provide an overview of their research and its potential for transformation into new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies—technologies that might someday play a significant role in the further enhancement of patient care. Following each presentation, the physician audience had a brief period of time for comment and Q&A.0

Samplings of topics included in the program were: Virtual Biomechanics/Rapid Detection Platform for the Diagnosis of Infections; Functional Electrical Stimulation/Human Motion Control; Advanced Materials for Biomedical Application (implants); and Sensor Fusion on Implantable Medical Devices.

These kinds of cross-functional collaborations (e.g., “marrying the bench and the bedside”) can expedite the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments and accelerate the speed at which they move from concept to clinical use and commercialization. In addition, collaborators will be more competitive for grants, contracts and commercialization opportunities that could bring significant resources and recognition to both CSU and St. Vincent Charity.
