Providence Hospitals Development Foundation names scholarship recipient

Providence Hospitals Development Foundation named Stephen Kyle Jones as the 2016 Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship recipient. A fourth-year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Jones will graduate in May and begin a residency in Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the recommendation from the school of medicine, one fellow student is quoted as saying, “I knew early on that (Kyle) would be not only a successful medical school student, but a colleague I could rely on. Whether it be through the numerous times I’ve called on him for examination prep, the passion he demonstrated through small group ethics discussion or witnessing the compassion he showed to his patients and classmates alike, he consistently lead by example.”

Jones is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society which is a national honor society that honors senior medical students and role model physicians that demonstrate excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. He is also a student member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and of the American Medical Student Association serving as past vice-president and treasurer of the UGA chapter. He has also been a volunteer for Healthy Columbia and has helped raise money for the Columbia Free Medical Clinic.

The Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, a highly competitive scholarship that seeks to recognize the best of the best, was established to honor the tradition of excellence in patient care exemplified by Dr. Jones. This scholarship was created in 2009 through the generous support of donors.
