Catholic Health Association celebrates 100 years

The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA), of which the Sisters of Charity Health System is a member, is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2015. Originally named the Catholic Hospital Association, CHA was founded in 1915 as an organization through which Catholic health systems, hospitals, continuum-of-care facilities and the sponsors of these organizations could work together to achieve success that would not be possible working separately.

On July 19, 1914, Catholic health ministry leaders came together to respond to technological advances that were changing health care delivery in the United States. They wanted to make certain that while making plans for transforming the delivery of health care in Catholic hospitals, the ministry maintained its mission and identity; and, by doing so, ensured vital sponsorship and a vibrant future for the Catholic health ministry. Their discussions helped lay the groundwork for CHA.

Officially established in 1915, CHA’s original headquarters was located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. CHA relocated its office to St. Louis in 1929. CHA remains dedicated to serving the nation's Catholic health care organizations and supporting the strategic directions of mission, ethics and advocacy.

As part of its centennial celebration, CHA is asking for video submissions to build a video portrait of the heroes and heroines that make Catholic health ministry happen every day—women and men from across the ministry who embody the mission of Catholic health care. CHA will share their stories during the anniversary celebration to inspire their coworkers, patients, families and communities.

Throughout its history, the Catholic Health Association has grown and changed as its members have grown and adapted to the needs of their communities. For all of its 100 years, CHA has raised a passionate voice for compassionate care.

About the Catholic Health Association

The mission of CHA is to advance the Catholic health ministry of the United States in caring for people and communities. Catholic health care is a ministry of the Catholic Church continuing Jesus' mission of love and healing in the world today. Comprised of more than 600 hospitals and 1,400 long-term care and other health facilities in all 50 states, the Catholic health ministry is the largest group of nonprofit health care providers in the nation.

At the national level, these organizations join together in the Catholic Health Association of the United States. In CHA, the ministry raises a collective passionate voice for compassionate care.
