Sign up with the Health Insurance Marketplace by February 15 have coverage March 1

The Sisters of Charity Health System believes that families and communities are stronger when everyone has access to quality, affordable health care. We want you to know about increased access to health insurance.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, since October 1 last year, millions of people have enrolled in new coverage under the health care law. They’ve signed up either for private insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace or for the Medicaid program. There’s still time to enroll and have coverage as soon as March 1. All you have to do is sign up with the Health Insurance Marketplace by February 15.

The Health Insurance Marketplace helps people who need health coverage to find it. When you fill out the Marketplace application, you’ll find out if you qualify for a private health insurance plan and whether you qualify for lower costs based on your household size and income. Some people may qualify for the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs in their state. Even if you don’t qualify for lower costs, you can still use the Marketplace to buy insurance.

There are three ways for you to get covered. You can enroll online at HealthCare.gov, over the phone at 800-318-2596 or with in-person assistance, which can be found through localhelp.healthcare.gov.

Applying online takes four easy steps:

  1. Set up an account. Start by going to HealthCare.gov. First, you’ll provide some basic information. Then choose a user name, password and security questions for added protection.
  2. Fill out the online application. You’ll provide information about you and your family, like income, household members, current health coverage information and more. This will help the Marketplace find options that meet your needs.
  3. Compare your options. You’ll be able to see all the options you qualify for, including private insurance plans and free and low cost coverage through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The Marketplace will tell you if you qualify for lower costs on your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs on private insurance. You’ll see details on costs and benefits to help you choose a plan that’s right for you.
  4. Enroll. After you choose a plan, you can enroll online and decide how you pay your premiums to your insurance company. You must pay your premium by the date the insurer provides before your coverage can begin. If you or a member of your family qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, a representative will contact you to enroll.

After applying, there are 4 steps you can take to be sure you’re ready for your coverage to begin:

  1. Pay your premium to your health insurance plan by the due date.
  2. Carefully review your member card and other materials your plan sends you.
  3. Review your plan’s provider directory so you’ll know where you can go for care.
  4. Contact your plan with any questions or if you don’t get a member card and enrollment materials.

Remember, if you enroll by February 15, your coverage will begin as soon as March 1. If you need a little more time, the open enrollment period continues until March 31.
