Providence Heart & Vascular Institute earns highest quality rating for 14th consecutive rating period

Providence Heart & Vascular Institute has, for the fourteenth consecutive rating period, received a “3-star” rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). This rating is based on empirical clinical information, not a patient survey, and exhibits the institute’s long-standing reputation of providing high quality outcomes.

Approximately 15 percent of heart programs of the 1,058 programs reviewed nationally received a 3-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality.

Providence has received the 3-star rating since the inception of the comprehensive STS rating system in 2006. The measure is based on quality comparisons of cardiac surgery among all hospitals that report data on their outcomes. Ninety-four percent of all heart programs in the country submitted to this review by STS.

“Providence Heart & Vascular Institute continues to maintain the best quality and service for our patients and this 3 star ranking is proof of that achievement,” said Dr. E. “Mac” Leppard, one of Providence Hospitals’ cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons. “Providence Hospitals and our partners have spent decades building this level of quality and our patients reap the rewards.”

STS is the leading international professional organization for heart surgeons, and is dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for heart, lung and esophagus surgeries, as well as other surgical procedures within the chest. Their ranking system and quality measures are based on a database of more than 4.5 million data points. As the number of health providers has increased over the years, Providence remains a stalwart among top-rated institutions.
