Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina dedicates new education center

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, which is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, held a dedication and blessing ceremony March 25 for its new education center. More than 50 guests joined in the celebration, including Sister Miriam Erb, CSA, congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine; Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, president and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System; members of the foundation’s board of trustees and staff, and members from the Sisters of Charity Health System’s extended ministry family in South Carolina. They were also joined by members of the community representing a variety of nonprofits and community leaders.

Following the dedication and blessing ceremony, attendees had time for fellowship and to enjoy the space. “Today is a celebration and reflection of our mission to continue to serve in the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. Our educational center will enable us to provide an optimal learning environment for nonprofit leaders and practitioners as well as a venue for community gatherings,” said Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina President Tom Keith.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina embarked on an initiative in 2007 to improve the skills and abilities of nonprofit organizations in South Carolina. Throughout the past five years, hundreds of staff, volunteers and trustees have benefitted from an array of training opportunities. Using experts in the field, classes have been held in grant writing, leadership, social media, financial management, marketing, board governance and several other topics. In 2010, a distance learning component was added to the program. This has allowed many people to participate in workshops from satellite locations in Florence, Charleston, Spartanburg, and Cleveland, Ohio. Growth in attendance and demand for workshops prompted the foundation to assess its delivery system and facility utilization. In December 2012, a major renovation began at foundation headquarters. Two offices, two storage rooms and a workroom were eliminated to create a 1,200 sq.-foot education center with state-of-the-art equipment.
