Providence Hospitals, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, has announced its 2012 recipient of the Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship: Callie Carroll, a medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Ms. Carroll is currently a 4th year medical student, graduating in May 2012, who plans to enter a career in obstetrics and gynecology.
This year’s recipient was recommended in large part due to the compassion she showed to her patients and their families during her clinical rotations. Her nomination mentioned “integrity and respect” that she demonstrated when working with patients and went on to say that Ms. Carroll has “true empathy and compassion” for both the people she works with and those that she serves.
“It was clear from Ms. Carroll’s nomination that she is dedicated to ensuring that each person she come into contact with felt comfortable and was treated with respect, which makes her an exceptional medical student with great promise for her future career in medicine and a great choice for the Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial scholarship,” said George Zara, Providence Hospitals president and CEO.
Ms. Carroll was presented with this scholarship award in March by Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, who is president and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System, and George Zara.
Through generous support from donors wishing to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Preston A. Jones, Providence Hospitals established a scholarship in his name. This scholarship, worth $2,500, is awarded on an annual basis to assist an outstanding medical student and honor Dr. Jones’ love of the medical profession.
