Providence Hospitals Awards Scholarship to Medical Student

Providence Hospitals has named Daniel Apple as its second recipient of the Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship. Apple, a fourth-year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, plans to enter a career in ophthalmology upon his graduation in May 2011.

The $2,500 scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to assist an outstanding medical student and honor the legacy of the late Dr. Jones’ love of the medical profession.

“Last week, we had the honor of meeting Daniel Apple to celebrate his achievements and share with him the meaning behind the scholarship,” said George Zara, president & CEO, Providence Hospitals. “More importantly, we joined Dr. Jones’ wife and close colleagues to encourage this young man to carry on the tradition of excellence in patient care exemplified by Dr. Jones.”

Continued Zara: “It is our hope that now, through the support of this scholarship and the sharing of Dr. Jones’ patient centered legacy, his healing touch will continue to transform the lives of patients through Mr. Apple’s skills and caring hands.”

Providence Hospitals, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is a ministry of Sisters of Charity Health System.
