Black Health Empowerment Project: Free and Open to the Public

"Black Health Empowerment Project: Eat, Move and Test for Health" organized by United States Representative Marcia Fudge, will be held Saturday, August 22 at John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio. This event is free and open to the public with doors opening at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 3:30 p.m. In addition to free breakfast and lunch, the event will provide health and wellness sessions for women, men and seniors; free health screenings and exhibitors; fitness and cooking demonstrations; fun workshops for kids, and more. St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Sisters of Charity Health System and the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland are among the sponsors. Celebration of Wellness

Celebration of Wellness is a daylong adventure in interactive learning & fun designed to assist Central neighborhood families in gaining necessary tools for healthy living. The health fair activities focus primarily on cancer detection and prevention. Events include a one-mile walk run, outdoor family games, and healthy snacks. Patient-Centered Medical Home Model

St. Vincent Charity Hospital is using the medical home model to improve access to health care. The medical home housed within the Health Clinic has begun to address the issue for those patients whose first contact with health care is typically the emergency department. But regardless of the patient’s entry point into the health care setting, a medical home is a best practice; it takes a team approach to primary care and puts the patient at the center of that team.  It is prevention and wellness focused, and access to a medical home can reduce the risk that a medical problem gets worse and requires a hospital visit. Centenarians in area keep up full schedule

102nd birthday party All of her adult life, Georgia Carter cooked for others. In fact, that's how the Akron woman earned her living. She was a personal cook for many years for a prominent physician's family. She was self-taught, didn't use recipes. And her clients were always satisfied. Mrs. Carter has long since put away her apron. In fact, she's been a resident at the Arbors of Fairlawn, a skilled nursing facility, and now has others cooking for her. More...

SCHS "can't wait" for health reform

Back in May, a group of employees from the Sisters of Charity Health System made health reform personal by creating signs expressing why they can't wait for health reform. We submitted those to the Catholic Health Association as part of their "I Can't Wait" for health reform photo essay project. The video was shown at the Catholic Health Association Annual Assembly in June and lo and behold many of our photos made the final film. You can see the full CHA video here. More...
