Sr. Cabrini Ferritto honored for her heritage

Sr. Cabrini Ferritto, CSA was recently honored October 5, 2009 at a ceremony held by the City of Cleveland's Italian American Heritage Committee. Sr. Cabrini's story starts in the Blue Rock neighborhood on Cleveland's east side where she was born on April 26, 1932, the daughter of immigrants from Italy's Abruzzo region. Sr. Cabrini entered the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA) in 1950. She has served as a teacher and principal in schools across Cleveland, as well as an incredible number of leadership positions within her community and the church. She served 16 years on the CSA Leadership Board of the Sisters of Charity Health System, director of Regina Health Center and Cornerstone Housing and on the board of the National Association of Treasurers of Religious Institutes. Sr. Cabrini has given her life to serving God, her church and her community. When CSA set up a new governance structure in 2007, Sr. Cabrini was one of only three named to share ultimate decision making authority. She is known and respected as a tireless worker who gets things done and makes a real difference. Congratulations, Sr. Cabrini!

Tahir named chief medical officer for Sisters of Charity Health System

Dr. Adnan Tahir, chief medical officer at St. Vincent Charity Hospital, has also been named chief medical officer of the Sisters of Charity Health System. In his new capacity, he also will serve as chief medical officer of the SCHS Quality Committee Board. Dr. Tahir received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut where he also did his residency. He has been with St. Vincent Charity Hospital for more than 17 years. As chief medical officer, Tahir will work with medical staff to establish and maintain high level of quality care and patient safety. Joining Tahir on the quality committee board as chair will be Dr. Richard Christie, director of graduate medical education at St. Vincent.

The Sisters of Charity Health System would like to welcome Joan Ross as chief operating officer for St. Vincent Charity Hospital. Ross comes to St. Vincent from Providence Hospitals based in Columbia, South Carolina, where she served as senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer since 2006. At Providence, which was founded by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in 1938 through mortgaging their motherhouse in Lakewood and is now the leading cardiovascular center in South Carolina, Ross developed a culture of patient safety by eliminating silos and enhancing communication across departments. Rosary Hall offering free seminars for Addiction Recovery Month

CLEVELAND, OH—(September 1, 2009)—September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and the addiction specialists at Rosary Hall at St. Vincent Charity Hospital will be holding seminars to help educate those who may have a loved one who is trapped within the cycle of addiction. This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Learn, Together We Heal,” emphasizes the need to use all available resources to help educate people about the disease and to help those affected by substance abuse to get support. Robin Bachman talks healthcare reform

Health care reform has been an ongoing effort for the Sisters of Charity Health System and its collaborative partner, Catholic Health Association. Even though SCHS has not endorsed any particular part of the bill, the main concern of these two organizations is to advocate for health reform that achieves coverage and access for all Americans. Robin Bachman, director of public policy, in collaboration with Catholic Health Association has been on the road providing updates on current federal legislation. In partnership with the ministries, her informative presentations have been heard by administration and staff of St. Vincent Charity Hospital and Mercy Medical Center, Providence Hospitals leadership in South Carolina, the Board of Catholic Community Connection and the First Friday Forum of Lorain County. Congratulations to Dr. Mike Canales and Olympic gold-medal winning gymnast Dominique Moceanu on the birth of their new son Vincent Michael! Dr. Canales, surgeon for The Spine and Orthopedic Institute of St. Vincent Charity Hospital, and wife Dominique Moceanu welcomed their 8 pounds, 9 ounces baby on March 13, 2009. Black Health Empowerment Project: Free and Open to the Public

"Black Health Empowerment Project: Eat, Move and Test for Health" organized by United States Representative Marcia Fudge, will be held Saturday, August 22 at John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio. This event is free and open to the public with doors opening at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 3:30 p.m. In addition to free breakfast and lunch, the event will provide health and wellness sessions for women, men and seniors; free health screenings and exhibitors; fitness and cooking demonstrations; fun workshops for kids, and more.
